ADAGIO FOR STRINGS
This was David’s first composition for strings and written to symbolize stately
occasions. He has always been an admirer of Sir Edward Elgar, particularly of the richness of his
string writing and his melodic invention. The slowness of the piece is intended to give time for pause
and reflection on things which may not now be regarded as important as they once were rather than
create a feeling of sadness. The pace of life today has seen the sacrifice of many once important
elements of life and the Adagio casts a backward glance to those times.
